Construction Assistant Job Description 

 

FLSA Status: Non-exempt, hourly 

Reports to: Construction Manager 

 

Job Summary: The Construction Assistant serves as the primary support to the Construction Manager for single-family housing construction. The individual will provide on-site guidance to volunteers, complete supply purchasing and receive deliveries, and perform construction duties as qualified and directed. The ideal candidate will be an engaged team player who is able to quickly establish rapport with daily groups of new and repeat volunteers with various construction skill levels. 

 

Requirements: High School education; must have some experience in construction, with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Applicants must list any paid or unpaid construction experience in their resume in order to be considered.  

 

Must have ability to perform basic arithmetic as needed to count and take inventory; basic computer skills preferred. Contractor license not required, but the right candidate will receive professional development support to achieve certifications. 

 

 

Key Areas of Work 

 

Planning & Construction of Habitat Homes 

  • Ensure that HKWHFH has the necessary tools for construction and that they are well maintained 
  • Help to obtain certificates of insurance and financial records from all contractors 
  • Assist homebuyer with materials selection where needed 
  • Attend meetings with Family Services, Homebuyer and Lender when needed 
  • Call and schedule the appropriate inspections of the project 
  • Be present for inspections as needed 
  • Ensure that all punch list items are completed correctly and in a timely manner 
  • Train new homebuyers on routine home maintenance 

 

Management of Materials & Tools 

  • Inventory & check quality of materials delivered to site and return rejects 
  • Clean up all tools and materials from site at end of each day 

 

Supervise Volunteers and Sub-Contractors 

  • Coordinate the work of volunteers and sub-contractors 
  • Teach volunteers how to complete the necessary tasks 
  • Involve the future homebuyers in the construction process; team with regular volunteers 
  • Assure that all work done is high quality and completed in a timely manner 
  • Complete regular communication with the Director of Community Engagement to ensure a positive volunteer experience; be willing to learn new best practices on volunteer engagement 

 

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Attend staff meetings on behalf of construction staff as needed 
  • Act as liaison between Construction, Director of Homeowner Services, Director of Community Engagement, and other administrative staff as needed 
  • Complete training and maintain relevant certifications including affiliate education, competent person, & site safety, safeguarding, etc. 
  • Obtain necessary permits as needed for all new home construction 
  • Oversee and engage in all phases of construction including but not limited to planning, site development, building, and reporting  
  • Collaborate with companies and other subcontractors with special requirements 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to listen to, understand, and follow directions. 
  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas; ability to work at heights requiring ladder access. 
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time; ability to lift above head and from the ground. 
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs and or ladders while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds. 

 

 

Hours: This is an hourly position, part-time. The anticipated schedule is Thursday, Friday, Saturday for a maximum of 24 hours a week; ample notice will be provided for instances when this schedule will vary. The Construction Manager will work with the assistant on variations to this schedule that may arise.  

 

Pay: $18+ per hour, commiserate with experience and/or relevant certifications
